During the week of Aug. 12-18, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

During the week of Aug. 12-18, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, 7; Puna, 5; Ka‘u and South Kohala, 2 each; and North Kohala, 1.

So far this year, there have been 792 DUI arrests compared to 878 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.8 percent.

There have been 853 major accidents so far this year compared to 926 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared to 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.5 percent.

To date, eight of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: three to drugs; one to alcohol; and four, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
